What is Ephesus??
Ephesus, built in the 10th century BC, is mentioned in the Bible several times. Cleopatra, with her then husband Marc Anthony, spent a winter in Ephesus and there is clear evidence that both St John and the Apostle Paul, who preached there and it is the subject of the Book of Ephesian, were in Ephesus.
The city was famous for the nearby Temple of Artemis (completed around 550 BC), which has been designated one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its many monumental buildings included the most famous Library of Celsus and a theatre capable of holding 24,000 spectators.
Ephesus was a center of learning and the birthplace and home of the great Pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus (l.c. 500 BCE). Women enjoyed rights and privileges equal to men, and there are records of female artists, sculptors, painters and teachers, including the artist Timarete (l.c. 5th century BCE), known for her painting of Artemis.
At night the streets of the city were brightly lit with oil lamps, a luxury not many cities could afford, and the citizens enjoyed a significantly sophisticated standard of living.
